Partners

The EU partners of SUNRISE have a rich cooperation history with the Ukrainian counterparts, including several ongoing projects between the EU and Ukrainian SUNRISE partners. The Estonian University of Life Sciences (EMU) was the coordinator of the Erasmus+ CBHE project INTENSE, establishing the Ukrainian National Doctoral School INTENSE in environmental policy, management and technology, which is at the core of the cooperation support action and was instrumental in identifying the needs and proposing the instruments to address them. Having run a workshop identifying available and missing competencies and expertise needed to address the needs of Ukrainian partners, the University of Camerino (UniCam) and the University of Zagreb (UniZg) have been invited to complete the EU segment of the consortium, given their unique expertise in managing and planning during- and post disaster.

In terms of complementing expertise and experience, all 3 EU partners are active in the development of e-resources and online services, and enhancing education strategies through digital transformation. SUNRISE will integrate the interdisciplinary expertise specific to the EU partner countries and needed in Ukraine to manage and overcome war impacts. This includes, among others, the expertise related to the management of earthquake risks and consequences (including planning, citizen monitoring, etc.) available in Italy (UniCam), post-disaster recovery after earthquake by enhancing resilience and addressing topics of the European Green Deal (green infrastructure, CO2 emission, energy efficient reconstruction, etc.) in Croatia (UniZg), recovery of wetland, forest and meadow ecosystems affected by mining and land amelioration activities developed in Estonia (EMU).

The SUNRISE partnership in Ukraine was formed by core partners of the INTENSE Doctoral School – Odessa National University (ONU), Kharkiv VN Karazin National University (KKNU), and Institute of the Ecology of the Carpathians of the National Academy of Sciences (ICE). This segment of partnership represents a balance of various fields of environmental expertise (and fields of doctoral studies), ranging from energy and environmental technologies (KKNU) to water and climate (ONU), soil, forest, biodiversity (KKNU, ICE), urban ecology and environmental monitoring (KKNU, ONU). They also represent all the Ukrainian macro-regions and types of research training facilities (universities and a research institute of the National Academy of Science).
